NHK may be allowed to take legal action against fee evaders

The Japanese Internal Affairs and Communications Minister, Taro Aso, has hinted that the government may allow public broadcaster NHK to take legal action against those who refuse to pay their licence fees.

NHK recently announced job cuts because of a budget shortfall. The number of people refusing to pay their licence fee reached 1.17 million at the end of July.

The refusals are in protest at a series of financial scandals involving NHK employees in the past few years.
