Antarctic Weather Station - Help neededHello, My name is Derek Shaw. I run the local Southend on Sea Linux User Group in Essex http://soslug.org I additionally work for the Mediashed in the capacity of Systems Administrator which has close links with that of SoSLUG. http://mediashed.org Predominately the Mediashed is part of a social art network charged with projects aimed at disadvantaged and social outcast groups. In addition to this, we also somehow land ourselves with some strange projects and it is one such project with which one or more of you might be able to assist or at least point me in the direction where best to obtain the information I need. First off, this project entails the construction of a remote weather station, this will be run using linux as its operating system and a PC has already been already constructed to prove the workings in principle. The hard part and the part and that I have no experience in, is the very harsh conditions this equipment will operate in with possible wind speeds of up to 120 mph and extremely low temperatures to mention a few of the difficulties. The unit I am told, will need to be powered via a methanol battery and will need to run unattended for 2-3 months at a time. If this wasn't bad enough they also require packet Ethernet radio system to cover a possible distance of up to 80 Km. The project is an Arts project and therefore limited on funds, in fact I don't even know what the budget will be as yet. Please could you convey or circulate this message to any Amateur Radio
operators in the Essex/London area with Many Thanks Derek Shaw
