The 5th IARU Region 1 High Speed Telegraphy ChampionshipThis outstanding international event in Amateur Radio was hosted by the Bulgarian Federation of Radio Amateurs (BFRA) and took place in the town of Primorsko on the Black Sea coast September 20-24. More than 120 competitors from Belarus, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Macedonia, Germany, Ukraine, Lithuania, China, Belgium, Norway and Bulgaria competed in five age categories for men and women separately. Women: Gold medals for receiving 54 words per minute letters were awarded to Elena Sibagatulina, Russia and Irina Teterskay, Belarus and for 54 wpm figures to Elvira Aryutkina, Russia. Gold medals for transmitting 46.4 wpm letters and 43.6 wpm figures went to Irina Teterskaya, Belarus Men: Gold medals for receiving 58 wpm to Oleg Ostrovskyi and Andrey Bindasov, Belarus Veterans over 45 years old: Gold medals for receiving, receiving of call signs (RUFZ) and Pile-up Morse Runner were won by Todor Kaikiev, Bulgaria. The Team Classification was won by Belarus, followed by Russia and Romania. During the Championship an Amateur Radio station with the special event call sign LZ5HST was operated by the participants.
