Yeoman service by Ham radio during floodsIn times of natural calamities, all channels of communication network including telephones and cellphones, excepting one, get disrupted. That exclusive communication system is none else than ‘Ham radio’. Yes, it did wonders during the recent Godavari floods, which ravaged the coastal Andhra districts, thanks to the dynamic efforts and selfless services of Ham expert Parvataneni Rajitha Kishore. When the entire agency was reeling under flood havoc, Rajitha Kishore volunteered to set up Ham network in the sub-collector’s local control room and rendered invaluable services by providing vital information to 14 MRO offices from Aug. 4 to 19. It is no exaggeration to say that basing on the data provided by Ham, collector Sasibhushan Kumar, sub-collector Yogitha Rana, special officer (flood operations) SK Sinha and other officials could monitor the relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-affected areas. Thus Rajitha Kishore won accolades from public as well as officials for her yeoman services not only during the present havoc but also in September last when the agency faced similar floods. Speaking to this website's newspaper, Rajitha Kishore, wife of a businessman of Khammam Chandra Kishore, recalled that as a student of KES women’s polytechnic in Vijayawada she was inspired by the encouragement given by the then Krishna collector (1986-87) for promotion of Ham radio system. Later, she underwent training in Ham operations and subsequently assisted in coordinating the relief operations when Krishna district was hit by the ‘super cyclone’ in 1990. The then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who toured the area, went round the Ham network, she said. She said that besides extending such Ham services to Maharashtra, Orissa
and Gujarat states when they were affected by natural calamities, she
trained some students and employees in handling Ham radio. Source: Newindpress.com
