HDTV for Free ?

In a recent press release announcing the appointment of Emma Scott as managing director, Freesat indicated they will be offering free High Definition Television services.

"Freesat will offer 200 channels plus interactive services for a one-off payment, targeting both the 27% of the UK population who are currently out of DTT coverage and all those with HD-enabled TV sets wanting HD for free."

HDTV uses the MPEG-4 standard rather than MPEG-2 curently used in Set-Top Boxes (STB's). As well as handling HDTV MPEG-4 enables twice as many standard definition channels as MPEG-2 to be transmitted in a given bandwidth.

This makes it likely that in the coming years there will be a second 'Digital Switch-over' as existing MPEG-2 STB's are replaced by MPEG-4 decoders.

UK's Freeview boxes could soon be obsolete
