South African 1420 MHz Radio Astronomy Project

John ZS5JF has provided a URL to the Durban Radio Astronomy project Indlebe which will use 1420 MHz to search the stars.

The year 2009 is the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first look at the night sky through a telescope and has been declared as the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) by a resolution from the United Nations.

In 2006 the Department of Electronic Engineering at the Durban University of Technology embarked on an ambitious project to design test and construct a radio telescope operating at the Hydrogen Line frequency of 1420 MHz with the intention of having a fully functional radio telescope operational on the campus by 2009 to coincide with the IYA.

The project is named Indlebe which is the Zulu word for ear. Further information can be found at:
