Russian Satellites: Smaller, Lighter, Cheaper

'Smaller, Lighter, Cheaper' a phrase once applied to Amateur Radio satellites is now being used to describe the Russian satellite programme.

Radio Amateurs pioneered the use of small low cost satellites for voice, picture and data communications.

Now an article by by Yury Zaitsev (RIA Novosti) on SpaceMart.com illustrates how the Russians are using low cost mini and nano satellites to do tasks that would have previously required very large satellites.

The article can be read at

The Strela platform is mentioned in the article: "The Strela platform, developed at the NPO Mashinostroyenia military and industrial corporation, is being readied for launch together with a series of mini-satellites."

The last Russian satellite carrying Amateur Radio is believed to be Baumanetz which along with 14 Amateur Radio Cubesats was onboard the DNEPR launch in July 2006 which failed to achieve orbit, see
