'Radio waves are the best ride'
'Forget net surfing, radio waves are the best ride.'
That was the headline
of a half-page article in both the Williamstown Advertiser and Footscray
Mail newspapers in Melbourne’s west.
The article and photograph featured Terry Murphy VK3UP who talked about his
amateur radio experiences, the overseas countries contacted and the many on-air friends from all walks of life he has made over the past 12 years.
He explained how he recently chatted with an airline pilot from South
America travelling to Melbourne. Among other contacts of interest have been
with a submarine docked at Newport Rhode Island and the Queen Mary, W6RO, in
Long Beach California.
Information was also printed about emergency communications and the role
radio amateurs played during the Great Sichuan earthquake in China in May
this year.
It concluded with Amateur Radio Victoria contact information for readers
wanting to know more, or interested in obtaining their own amateur radio
licence.
