House of Representatives passes Webcaster Settlement ActThe US House of Representatives has unanimously passed the Webcaster Settlement Act, which would allow Internet radio stations to negotiate with the music industry for a royalty rate lower than what Congress mandated last year. The vote came following the decision of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) to drop its opposition the the bill after Congress addressed its concerns. The NAB will not now oppose the bill when it moves to the Senate for a vote, either today or tomorrow. Congress is expected to adjourn tomorrow, and the Webcaster Settlement Act enables Internet radio stations to reach an agreement with the music industry while Congress is out of session. This is important because some Webcasters say a delay will force them out of business.
