G0KYA's HF Propagation Prediction Report,
January 2011
Steve G0KYA, of the RSGB's Propagation Studies Committee,
has now published his short-path propagation prediction charts for
the UK for January 2011.
These are based on 100w to a
dipole at 35ft and a smoothed sunspot number of 34.
The maps are produced with
Hamcap (which is VOACAP-based program) and the relative lightness of the plot area shows the probability of you being able to make a contact. They do not take into account the effects of any elevated K and A geomagnetic index that may occur and are meant as a rough guide.
The plots show that 10m (28MHz) will continue to be disappointing overall. 20m (14MHz), 17m (18MHz) and perhaps even 15m (21MHz) will still be the best bands during daylight with 40m (7MHz) being a useful band from late afternoon and through the night. 30m (10MHz) also shows good promise if you are into digital modes and CW.
Also look out for 80m openings at night with paths across the Atlantic to the US and Canada closing soon after sunrise.
